"I Probably Got Three Outs In Me Tomorrow" - Stanford's Psychopath Ace Quinn Mathews After Throwing An Insane 156 Pitch Complete Game To Keep His Team Alive In Their Super Regional
Quinn Mathews is a legend and I love everything about him. His coaches should be jailed for malpractice.
Stanford's ace took the ball last night with the season on the line, as the Cardinal faced elimination in their super regional matchup against Texas. He refused to let them go quietly into that good night.
Mathews took a page out of Old Hoss Radbourn's book and threw every pitch that it took for his boys to be victorious Sunday night. In an era where the 100 pitch count is viewed as a bright red light, Mathews just kept going until the final out was recorded. Afterwards he spoke to the broadcast booth and gave such a chill interview, capping it off by saying he's probably good for 3 outs in tonight's do or die game.
What a sicko.
Now hand up I'm not too well versed with college prospects outside of the top guys like Dylan Crews and Paul Skenes. I assumed for a guy like Mathews to be allowed to throw that many pitches he didn't have much of a future in the big leagues. Well, the 22 year old was drafted in the 19th round by the Rays but elected to come back for his senior year. By doing so it turns out he's greatly improved his stock becoming Stanford's Friday night pitcher, and is currently ranked as the 119th prospect in the upcoming draft. That means we're talking about a 4th-5th round talent here just out there throwing until his arm falls off. Insanity.
Stanford's coaching staff was asked for comment on letting him throw so many pitches:
You may look at the score in the 9th and wonder why bother pushing it given the high pitch count. Well, the night before Texas rallied for 5 runs in the 9th to steal the opening game. In Quinn Mathews' final game in front of his home crowd he wasn't letting anyone fuck it up and his coaches didn't bother putting up a fight to stop him.
You gotta respect the shit out of that kind of performance and mentality. Thoughts and prayer to his UCL in the future, but going out a legend like that is so sick. That being said, the coaching staff should be locked up for life. That's some real life Bud Kilmer shit to be that reckless about your own guy. The sad state of reality is that college coaches don't give a fuck if their players blow out their arms at the next level. Not their problem. The last MLB pitcher to throw that many pitches was Tim Wakefield in 1997. The last non-knuckleballer was Roger Clemens the year before. Mathews has thrown over 300 pithes in the last 10 days. Dr. James Andrews, Dr. Neal ElAttrache, and Dr. Christopher S. Ahmad should have a TLC triple threat match to see who gets to do his surgery in a few years. I don't know if I should be rooting for Stanford to win tonight to see more of Mathews or for them to lose to save whatever is left of his arm.
